The 2023 Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference was held on the 28th. The flagship report released on the day of the forum showed that, as an important engine of the world economy, the overall recovery of Asian economies will accelerate in 2023. The report predicts that the weighted real GDP growth rate of Asian economies will be 4.5% in 2023, an increase of 0.3 percentage points from 2022, which will become a bright spot in the context of the world economic slowdown.
The Boao Forum for Asia released two annual flagship reports on the morning of the 28th, one is the traditional flagship report: Asian Economic Prospects and Integration Process 2023 Annual Report. The other is published by the forum for three consecutive years: Sustainable Development in Asia and the World 2023 Annual Report.
Among them, the Asian Economic Prospects and Integration Process Report (referred to as the report) pointed out that although the global economic growth forecast in 2023 has been raised, it is still relatively weak, and the external demand of Asian economies will face adverse effects. However, the global inflation rate is expected to drop from 8.8% in 2022 to 6.6% in 2023, global food prices also continue to decline, and the environment for world economic growth has improved.
Zhang Yuyan, editor-in-chief of the report and director of the Institute of World Economics and Politics of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said in the report release meeting that after analyzing 50 economies in Asia and taking a weighted average, the Asian economic growth forecast is 4.5%, which is higher than that of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The 2.9% annual growth rate of the world economy predicted in January in 2023 is still higher. Zhang Yuyan said that everyone can see the gap between 4.5% and 2.9%, and the report team is more optimistic about Asia (economic prospects).
The report shows that in 2023, East Asia is the region with the most obvious increase in growth rate relative to 2022. It is expected to rise from 3.2% in 2022 to 4.5% in 2023, an increase of 1.3 percentage points, mainly benefiting from China's economic growth recovery, while South Asia will have the highest growth rate in 2023 among the regions.
