Portugal has accumulated more than 10,000 confirmed cases of pneumonia in Wuhan today. Government information shows that more than 500,000 workers across the country face temporary layoffs.
Portuguese Health Minister Marta Temido said in a press conference: "This battle against epidemics is not a 100-meter race, but a marathon."
She urged the people to step up their actions to fight the epidemic because there was no "light at the end of the tunnel."
Portugal currently has a total of 10,524 confirmed cases of pneumonia in Wuhan, with 266 deaths. Health authorities predict that the epidemic plateau period will fall at the end of May.
Although the Portuguese government has launched several measures to assist families and businesses, including billions of euros in stimulus packages, the economy that was bailed out in the past is still struggling in the face of the epidemic.
According to the Ministry of Labor ’s statement today, since the bailout application was accepted a week ago, 31,914 companies across the country have filed for layoffs. Most of these enterprises are micro or small enterprises with a total of 552,000 employees.
